The spiritual motto of Saint Francis of Assisi, which summarizes his mission, is often identified in the phrase: “I have done my part; what is yours to do, may Christ teach you.” This statement highlights the importance of individual responsibility and service to others, central principles in Franciscan life.
Franciscan Symbolism
The three knots on the cord (or cincture) of the Franciscan habit represent the three fundamental religious vows professed by the followers of Saint Francis of Assisi: Poverty, Chastity and Obedience. Worn at the waist, these knots symbolize not only the commitment to live according to the Gospel counsels, but also a deep dedication to serving the community and fostering universal brotherhood.

800 Years Since the Death of Saint Francis
An Anniversary that Speaks to the Heart of the World
Visiting Assisi is not just about taking a holiday, but about experiencing something profound, immersed in beauty, history and spirituality. Assisi is known throughout the world as the birthplace of Saint Francis, patron saint of Italy and a symbol of peace, simplicity and love for nature. The strong spirituality of Assisi is one of the main reasons to visit it.
In 2026, we commemorate 800 years since the death of Saint Francis of Assisi, which occurred on October 3, 1226. This anniversary is not only an occasion to honor one of the most beloved saints of the Church, but also an opportunity to reflect on the relevance of his message today: a message of peace, fraternity, simplicity and love for creation.
From February 22 to March 22, 2026, an event of extraordinary importance will take place: the public exposition of the relics of the Saint. For the first time, the body of Saint Francis will be displayed to the public, visibly at the foot of the main altar in the Lower Basilica, allowing the faithful to pay homage in a direct and profound way.
The motto of the celebrations is “Saint Francis lives”, expressing how his message of poverty, fraternity and care for creation continues to inspire even after eight centuries. The celebrations will not only be intense devotional experiences, but will also include moments of prayer, meetings and reflections on the Franciscan message that promotes peace, brotherhood, service and the protection of nature.
In Italy, October 4, the liturgical feast day of Saint Francis, will once again become a national holiday starting from 2026, further strengthening the bond between Saint Francis and Italy’s cultural and spiritual identity.
